Muslim Community is happy after the announcement by the Indian Government that now preference would be given to those in the selection for Haj Pilgrimage who have never performed Haj. This rule is not applicable for those who are going to Haj through Private operators. This effort by Indian Government is taken to provide the benefit of Haj subsidy to those applicants who have never performed the Haj.
Each year about 3 lakh applications are submitted to Haj Committee of India for Haj Pilgrimage and out of which only half of them are selected. This year India Haj quota is 1,25000. About 50000 people go through private operators for Haj each year from India. About 3.5 mn people perform Haj from across the world every year. They visit the holy cities of Muslim religion , Makkah and Madinah in Saudi Arabia to perform Haj.
The quota of Haj pilgrims for different states and Union Territories is based on the total population of the respective states and percentage of the Muslim population in that state. Last year Uttar Pradesh was having the maximum Haj quota followed by West Bengal and Bihar. Though, Bihar was not able to use the Haj quota , so later on the seats were distributed to other states.
Out of total 1,25000 Haj quota, 11,000 are reserved with the government. These seats are distributed for Khadim-ul-Hujjaj, Mehram (women), Bohras, pilgrims from Jammu and Kashmir and Lakshadweep, states/union territories with Haj applications in excess of the quota, the Haj Committee of India and the central government.
